Join us at Birdsland Reserve in Belgrave Heights at our Bush kids program where we will immerse ourselves in nature going on a bird bush walk and discovering the amazing diversity of colour and sound that exists at Grant’s Picnic Ground. The children will learn about bird habitats and how birds use colour and sound for such things as camouflage and communication. Then on return, the group will create a piece of art themed around birds.
Led by artist and teacher, Kate Rijs, our workshop will use nature items to create art pieces for the children to take home. Kate will take you on a bush walk through the rainforest, learning about the local flora and fauna and then looking at possibilities and ways to incorporate art into nature.
Our program is for children aged 3 – 10 years and is specifically aimed at supporting children to develop important social, physical and emotional skills through hands-on learning and teaching them real-life bush survival and bushcraft skills.
Our program is based on the leading research from world-renowned and leading Paediatric Occupational Therapist, Angela Hanscom, author of Balanced and Barefoot to give your child optimum opportunity to build their gross motor and physical skills through climbing, balancing, walking and fine motor skills during our craft activities. Research clearly shows that the more time your child spends in nature, the better they are prepared for learning and life skills, both physically and emotionally. As Angela illustrates, “too many of today’s children miss out on the full sensory richness offered beyond the walls of the classroom or home.”
