Description

Join us at Yarra Bend Park in Kew for our exciting Bush Kids program, where we’ll dive into the fascinating world of the Grey-headed flying fox colonies that call this area home. Get ready for a hands-on experience as we observe these incredible creatures up close and discover their unique features! Our workshop will include a nature walk, engaging games, enriching nature connection activities, and valuable insights about the Grey-headed flying fox. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to create and take home your very own handmade bat!

These native megabats roost in Yarra Bend Park, with their colony numbers soaring to around 35,000 during the summer and dwindling to about 1,000 in the winter months. Much like human “grey nomads,” these bats migrate north when the weather gets chilly and return when it warms up. They enjoy roosting in prime locations and are quite sociable! Join us to learn more about these remarkable animals, their habitats, and how you can contribute to protecting the environment.

Grey-headed flying foxes have been part of Australia’s east and south for around two million years and hold special significance for the local Wurundjeri people, who see them as the Balayang, brother to the totemic ancestor Bunjil the Eaglehawk. You might spot them roosting in the park during the day!

This Bush Kids workshop will be led by Kirsty, our dedicated Bush Kids facilitator and Primary School Teacher. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to connect with nature!

Ages: 3 – 8 years
